Alexander Stelioes-Wills
Artist Statement: Alexander Stelioes-Wills has been painting since 1976, but truly became a painter in 1996. He has participated in national and international juried exhibitions throughout the U.S. He has been shown in solo, group, and invitational exhibitions in Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Missouri, Mississippi, and New Jersey. He has also completed numerous outdoor public murals in Missouri and Mississippi. He received his MFA in Painting from Indiana University and a BFA in Painting and a BA in History from Washington University in St. Louis. He currently teaches at Mississippi University for Women, where he is also the gallery director.
Stelioes-Wills has worked as an opera scenic painter, muralist, mural restorer, bookstore manager, telemarketer, and editorial assistant (serf) at Marvel Comics. His paintings have always been related to memory, childhood stories, children’s games, compositional and palette tensions, and an unhealthy obsession with growing up in suburban New Jersey in the 1970s.
