Artist Statement: Most of my life has been spent painting or drawing, but at the age of 9, photography became a passion. As a result of the art interest, I now “paint pictures with my camera” instead of a brush. I moved to Mississippi 5 years ago and have been captivated with the history, tradition, and support for the arts in this state.
The majority of my time is spent photographing nature, carousel horses, statuary, and motorcycles. I try to experiment with different techniques such as capturing the carousel figures in motion, blurring the background and keeping the subject in focus. It may be a bit more difficult, but the results are just different. In nature, I play with lighting and weather as well as catching the birds in flight and movement. When shooting statuary and motorcycles, I tend to concentrate on portions of the subject as opposed to the entire object, letting the viewer be able to appreciate the details of the piece which sometimes go unnoticed.
All the images are reproduced on high quality watercolor paper, canvas, or “lazer reflective” paper. These surfaces tend to soften the images to lend a more artistic appearance.
Photography has been a delightful challenge for me, since I only use photoshop to lighten, darken, and size my images to standard sizes. I admire people who can manipulate a photograph in photoshop, but I try to create the picture in the camera. The shadows and background that are available are what I use, so at times it can be frustrating or challenging, but if you can shoot it with a camera – I love it! I sincerely hope that through my photography, you can enjoy the artistry of life as I see it.
