Symphony Tribute
Julia Vissoto Saunders passed away on May 24, 2009. For over thirty years, Julia worked tirelessly to support the Starkville-Mississippi State University Symphony Association, serving for 21 years as the Symphony’s General Manager. For many of those years, it was Julia who scheduled the concerts, reserved concert venues, recruited the musicians (in some cases even housing and feeding the out-of-town performers) and arranged for their compensation, ordered music, sent out rehearsal notices, moved chairs, raised much of the funding needed, and in many other ways worked tirelessly to see to it that Starkville had a symphony orchestra. The many hundreds of Symphony Association concert goers and the thousands of children who thrill to the Association’s Programs for Children concerts owe her a tremendous debt of gratitude. Julia will most certainly be missed.
Happenings at the Heritage Museum
Good things keep happening at the Oktibbeha County Heritage Museum. After its grand reopening on December 7, 2008, and good publicity, visitors’ attendance has increased substantially.
The museum is included in the new Arts Walk brochure and was open for the initial Arts Walk on April 23, 2009. It was also open during the Armstrong School program at Oddfellows Cemetery.
On May 2, 2009, the Starkville Central Neighborhood Foundation presented a Preservation Award to the museum for its interior renovation. The trophy is displayed on the exhibit case in the museum’s entry room. The Board of Aldermen and Mayor Dan Camp had recognized, on December 16, 2008, the museum with a Proclamation of Gratitude for its renovation efforts, citing the individuals who had worked on revamping the exhibits.
On April 7, the Board of Aldermen and the mayor approved a landscape plan for the museum. It is an innovative, “green” (sustainable) approach for correcting the museum’s drainage problem. A groundbreaking, which was organized by the Greater Starkville Development Partnership and City Engineer Edward Kemp, took place April 22. Wayne Wilkerson and Cory Gallo are spearheading this project with their students in the MSU Landscape Department, in cooperation with Kemp.
A direct-mail membership drive for the new Friends of the Heritage Museum occurred in February for 2009 and met with good community response. Membership envelopes and volunteer forms are available at the museum for anyone interested in joining the Friends and supporting the museum. Checks (made payable to the Friends of the Oktibbeha Co. Heritage Museum) for membership dues may be sent to the museum, as well. Friends dues are tax deductible.
Museum board leaders and Friends board leaders are discussing museum needs so that grants can be applied for. Potential ways that Friends funds can be used to enhance the museum are also being considered.
Recent “Our Community” programs, sponsored by the Friends of the Museum and the GSDP, focused on quilts; fossils identification; images of yesteryear Starkville; Bob Buchanan, former member of the Negro Baseball League; and an introduction to ham radio. The series will be on summer vacation, but will resume in the fall.
A reception is being planned for new leaders of the city, county, GSDP, and MSU this summer. New brochures and a new web site for the museum are also in the development stage. You are invited to visit the Heritage Museum, at 206 Fellowship St., Tuesdays - Thursdays, 1 - 4 p.m., and by special arrangement (323-0211).

StarShine culminates Saturday evening when Chef St.John prepares an exceptional four-course meal complete with wine pairings. Guests will also have the opportunity to bid on StarShine Auction packages, including dinner parties with local chefs and a fabulous vacation package.
