Review of Gala 2006
SAAC’s Fourth Annual Gala fundraiser, on November 10, 2006, at the Hunter Henry Center, was another exciting Arts Council event. 2006's theme was “Lighting the Way for the Arts,” as represented by centerpieces and other decorations featuring various types of lanterns. A Moroccan influence was evident in the deep autumn colors used in the fabrics, beads, and other materials as part of the evening’s décor.

The Gala’s steering committee included Wanda Thorne, chair; Michelle Jones, co-chair; Barb Adkins; Gloria Bagwell-Rowland; Candy Crecink; Fay Fisher; Andy Gaston; Dylan Karges; Sharon Powe; Jennifer Rabideau; Suzy Turner; and Patty Vizzini. “Save the Date” cards for upcoming SAAC events (Stars Shine, Cotton District Arts Festival, and Art in the Garden) were available at each table for guests to take home.

Instrumental music was be featured at this year’s Gala, including a Starkville High School strings ensemble, under the direction of Phillip Martin; Peggie Robinson, a professional harpist from Tupelo’ and the Starkville/MSU Symphony Brass Quintet, directed by Dr. Michael Brown.

Attendees began the evening at 6:30, enjoying wine and cheese as they previewed silent auction items. A buffet dinner was served at 7:15, with food prepared by MSU’s French chef, Roland René Parny, and his Dining Services Staff. Bidding on the silent auction items took place between 8 and 9 p.m. The auction provided opportunities to purchase original art and other creative works. Attendees enjoyed bidding on interesting and varied services offered through the auction. From 9 until 11 o’clock, guests danced to the music of 40 Fingers, also known as the Barbecue Boys.

Tickets, in the form of numbered invitations that graphically supported the theme. The $50 per person tickets were offered first to SAAC supporters—people who are Arts Council patrons and members, last year’s Gala attendees, and people who attended the July membership/dessert party.
